Sometimes we say things that we think they are funny. Then we see that the children we talked with do not want to talk with us any longer or become very upset or angry. These are negative feelings and we are always going to try to stay away from negative feelings.
Today we are going to learn that some things that we say can hurt some ones feelings and make them upset. Procedures:
Ask the students to make two columns on their sheet of paper. First column will include appropriate topics and the other column will include inappropriate topics. UDL: For lower functioning students the worksheets will be modified by using Writing with Symbols 2000. The students will have to identify pictures of mean vs. kind people. Initial instruction:
The teacher will explain that some topics are not appropriate to talk about at school. These topics include:
- Calling people names
- Talking about your private parts
- Cursing
Other topics can be used at school and students will be encouraged to talk about. These topics include:
- Talking about music, arts, etc.
- Talking about your friends in a positive way
- Talking about games, etc. Guided practice:
The teacher will play a recording of different people conversations. The teacher will stop the recording after each scenario and explain why the statements were appropriate or inappropriate.
Independent practice:
The students will be given a list with mixed kinds of statements. Using the two columns given at the beginning of the class the students will have to sort out the statements into appropriate or inappropriate.
UDL: Multiple meanings of expression – lower functioning students will be given pictures with YES or NO answers. The student will use YES for appropriate statements and NO for inappropriate statements. Evaluation: Students will have listed the statements in both columns labeled as appropriate or inappropriate. Performance Evaluation: students will have at least 4 correct identified statements on both lists.
